The G.S.P Hobby Series Gold Plating Kit for Brush Plating and Mini Tanking is a specially adapted version of our standard G.S.P Troy Gold Plating Kit. Designed specifically for home hobbyists and non-professional users, this kit offers the exact same high-quality equipment found in our professional setups, allowing users to plate a 24k gold or bright silver finish over a variety of metals.
The key difference is in the chemistry: this version features our unique, cyanide-free G.S.P Hobby Series 24K Gold Plating Solution, alongside hobby use versions of some of the required prep solutions that are usually reserved for professional use. Because these formulas are optimised for non-commercial workspaces, they do not carry the purchase restrictions associated with professional-use-only chemicals. You get high-quality gear with safer, accessible solutions that deliver flawless results in your dedicated workspace.
This kit will allow you to seamlessly gold or silver plate larger items up to the size of a standard kettle using a brush plating technique, mini-tank (dip plate) small objects like coins for fast, even coverage, and pen plate intricate details with fine precision. You can work on a large variety of metals and as the equipment is portable, you can plate items in situ without even dismantling them.
Examples of items that can be transformed in gold or silver include: medals, sports trophies, antique metalwork, coins, and metal phone casings. The kit also allows for the restoration of luxury handbag hardware, clasps, buckles, and worn plating on jewellery* as well as the ability to gold plate car badges, emblems, and trim directly on the vehicle. Users may also update installed bathroom taps, kitchen fixtures, and architectural hardware.
Plating over copper, brass, or silver? You will benefit from the inclusion of nickel and copper in this kit, applying these base layers first prevents metal migration, ensuring your final gold or silver layer stays vibrant, adheres perfectly, and resists wear over time.
At the heart of the kit is the compact yet highly capable 2.25A Portable Plating Plug. While optimised for the included Hobby Series formulas, this power source is fully compatible with finishes like rhodium and platinum which can be puchased separately, allowing your setup to grow with your skills.

Brush Plating
Here is a brief overview of the brush plating process:
Step 1: Clean / polish the item to be plated.
Step 2: If the item is chrome plated, strip the chrome with G.S.P Chrome Stripper which takes between 1-15 minutes and then rinse. If the item is nickel or stainless steel, brush over with the appropriate activator for a few seconds and then rinse.
Step 3: Brush the gold or other metal solution of your choice over and over, building up thickness as you go. Do this for between 2-20 minutes depending on the size of the item and then rinse / dry.
Step 4: Rub G.S.P Gold Polish over the item and then wipe off to bring out the final shine.
Please note: You do not always apply precious metals directly over the original substrate, it depends on what that metal is.
Examples include - copper would need to be plated with G.S.P Nickel Plating Solution first, this would be followed by using G.S.P Nickel Activator, then the piece could be gold plated or plated in your chosen precious metal.
Brass would be plated with G.S.P Copper Strike, then with G.S.P Nickel Plating Solution, followed by G.S.P Nickel Activator and the piece could then be gold-plated or plated in your chosen precious metal.

What is the difference between this kit and your G.S.P Troy Gold Plating Kit for Brush Plating and Mini Tanking?
This is the version of the kit designed for non-professional users. Some of the solutions - 24k gold, nickel and copper strike that are included in our standard Troy Kit are restricted for business or professional use only.
In this kit, you are supplied with hobby-safe versions of each of these solutions with no purchase restrictions. The included 24k gold solution is completely cyanide free.
The rest of the kit, including the equipment and all other plating and prep solutions are identical. Our Hobby Series gold takes a little longer to deposit and may require a little more post-polishing, but when supplied instructions are followed, the results will be of a high standard.

Which plating machine is supplied in this kit?
2.25A Portable Plating Plug. This is a dial-operated, selectable voltage plating plug.
Please note that this machine comes with a UK plug - to use in the US or other countries, all that is required is a plug converter - this will convert a UK 3 pin plug into a standard 2 pin mains plug. These are inexpensive and available in hardware stores / online. Your converter does NOT need to be a step up/step down adapter, just a regular converter that can be purchased, to take the US as an example, for around $8.
